| Hi I'm just learning to play the 5 string banjo, following David Cavage's lessons in Musicmoose.org. I wander if anyone has the words and chords for Drink That Mash Talk That Trash. I love the tune and I think it would be great to practise. Cheers Geoff | |

| Great start...David's a great guy to learn from I love MusicMoose!
Here are the lyrics
I remember it was back in the thirties I think we had nothin' to eat but there was plenty to drink Mom got the groceries on (commodities will) but pop'd trade them off and get sugar for the still so he could drink that mash and talk that trash
Now things were pretty bad but they could've been worse instead of eating gravy it could've been dirt Pop'd go and lean on a shovel all day more sugar money from the WPA and he'd spend it on mash so he could talk that trash
Now down in the valley lived old Maggie Hill she was just about a mile from pops moonshine still When mom and I would find ourselves alone We knew pop had found old Maggie home and they were drinking that mash and talking that trash
Now mom knew what was goin' on I know but she wasn't about to let it show I knew she wasn't goin' after pop today cause tomorrow he gets some money from the WPA but he would spend it on mash so he could talk that trash
But Friday night mom took the shotgun down Heard a noise from the valley and looked all around It won't be long till that noise would stop that sawed-off for me (cried out a pop) 'cause he was drinking that mash and talking that trash
they said pop didn't have the chance of a mouse cause that sawed-off tore away half of the house and the judge told mom "it's funny to me they'd bring you into court with such a plea" 'cause he was drinking that mash and talking that trash
Now if I know pop and where he's at he's still totin' sugar and a getting fat he just looks over and says "let her burn, while me and old Satan bend another worm." so we can drink that mash and talk that trash so we can drink that mash and talk that trash

| Also, could you clarify whether you meant the tabs or chords for the song? I'm not sure if you meant tabs, but typed chords. | |

Sorry for the delay, I meant chords so I could strum it. I've just tidied up an old Barnes and Mullins 5 string zither banjo with new head, bridge and strings. It sounds nice till I tried to tune it to AECGc, then the fifth string snapped. Where should I capo to tune it that way. I think it's called C tuning. cheers Geoff

| A zither is tuned to normal G tuning (gDGBD). To get an open C chord you would capo the bottom 4 strings to 5th fret, and 5th string to 10th fret. This is a standard C tuning. 1. D 2. B 3. G 4. C - From G tuning, tune the D note down to C. 5. G This is double C tuning 1. D 2. C - From G tuning, tune the B note up to C. 3. G 4. C - From G tuning, tune the D note down to C. 5. G This is another website with a whole bunch of C tunings http://www.haruteq.com/bvb-02.htmHope that helps! | |

| Thanks very much for the help. The tuning I quoted was from a ukulele tutorial and it says to tune the first 4 strings to AECG and play the fifth string open in c. The tutorial then goes on to show chords for various songs using C, F and G7 chords only. He calls it the 3 chord trick. I'm still practising rolls so I've a bit to go yet!! cheers Geoff | |

| Going back to "Drink that mash", I was thinking that if I knew the chords, I could do a few for'd / back'd rolls and accompany the song. But I would need to know the chords throughout the song. It's a good slow song to practise on I thought. cheers geoff | |

| Once again, sorry for the delay in replying. I was away on holiday. That would be great if someone could put chords to the song by ear. I tried it and realised I'm about as musical as a bean tin!! cheers geoff | |
